Digital Art Competition - The Lumen Prize Award welcomes entries up to 8 May 2020

The 9th Lumen Prize for Art and Technology calls for entries with a prize fund of US$11,500. Lumen Art Projects is a non-profit based in the UK, dedicated to providing opportunities for artists engaging with technology globally thereby, widening the enjoyment, understanding and appreciation of art created with technology.

The Lumen Prize for Art and Technology recognizes the very best art created with technology internationally. The annual competition draws entries from artists globally and acclaims to have given away more than US$70,000 in prize money since its launch in 2012.

Eligibility

The competition is open to all artists worldwide. The artists can also submit a collaborative project by registering as an artist collective or an artist with partners. There is also no limit on the age of a submitted work.

Deadline for submission: May 08, 2020

Announcement of long listed artists: July 08, 2020

Announcement of shortlisted artists: September 09, 2020

Announcement of winners: October 22, 2020

Entry fees

The contest charges an entry fee of US$48.00 for two works and US$24.00 for each additional work.

 Judging process and panel

The judging process will occur in two stages. The long list (60 works approximately) will be selected by International Selectors Committee of curators, art specialists and academics. This long list will then be reviewed by an eminent Jury Panel, who will select the finalists and winners.

The artists must submit:

The prize

All artists selected for the long list, shortlist and the award winners are eligible for opportunities with the Lumen Art Projects, the parent organization including commissions, exhibitions and events globally.

Gold Award $4000: This award will be given to the artist whose work is judged to be exceptional across all categories.

Moving Image Award $1000: For excellence in time-based artwork, including animation, CGI, generative or video art; narrative or non-narrative works.

Still Image Award $1000: For outstanding work using digital processes in its creation, including photo-manipulation, 3D renders, or drawings created on phones, tablets or PCs using digital software.

3D/Interactive Award $1000: For excellence in engaging with audiences through sound, touch or movement, including games, installations, websites or 3D sculptures.

XR Award $1000: For excellence in Virtual, Augmented or Mixed Reality art.

BCS A.I. Award $1000: For excellence in the use of artificial intelligence to produce an outstanding piece of art.

Global South Award $1000: For excellence in art created with technology by an artist or collective from Africa, Latin America or the developing economies of Asia and the Middle East.

Nordic Award $1000: For excellence in art created with technology by an artist or collective from Nordic Countries

Photo monitor Student Award $500: For excellence in Still or Moving Image created by a student currently enrolled in a degree programme in the arts.

Award programme

All shortlisted artists are eligible to take part in a range of opportunities as part of our awards programme.

This programme includes an Awards Ceremony at the Barbican Centre for Performing Arts, London on 22 October 2020. The ceremony will be followed by a networking event with Jack Addis, Director of Lumen Prize. There will be an Artists’ Meet-up with Carla Rapoport, Lumen’s Founder and Executive Director and Artists the following day at IBM Southbank, London. There will also be the opportunity to be curated into the Directors Showcase in London in October.
