Vegetable carving origin is disputed , some attribute it to Japan and others to Thailand . In Japan its called " Mukimono" . Acording to the book " Japanese garnishes , the Ancient Art of Mukimono " the author traces the root of vegetable carving to ancient times when food was served unglazed in a pot . The platters were covered with leaf , Artistic chefs folded and cut the leaf for attractive presentations . Mukimono didnt become famous untill sixteenth century .
